Rider is the knit one. The upper is a single piece of fine knit that wraps the whole foot — no stitched panels across the forefoot, so there are fewer seams to rub and fewer places to split after a term of being pulled on and off. It flexes with the foot instead of resisting it, which on a growing child matters more than it does on an adult.
Through the lace area, a moulded cage holds the eyelets and stiffens the midfoot, so the shoe keeps its shape when the laces are pulled tight. Underneath, a tall stacked midsole with deep horizontal grooves takes the impact of stairs, a playground and a bus, with a moulded tread cut into the outsole.
Everything is black — upper, knit, laces, sole — which is what most Indian school uniform codes ask for. Inside there is a cushioned sports insole, a padded collar, and a heel pull tab so a child can get them on alone.
